The Maths Methods You Don't Recognise: Column Sums and the 'New' Maths

The first time my son showed me his maths homework, I felt a flash of panic. The sum was simple, but the method was nothing like the one I was taught, and my confident "let me show you" quickly turned into "let me just check how your teacher does it". If you have ever felt out of your depth helping with primary maths, you are in very good company. Here is a friendly guide to why it looks so different, and what the main methods actually are.

Why Maths Is Taught Differently Now

The big shift is that modern primary maths focuses heavily on children understanding what they are doing, not just following a procedure. Before children learn the quick, compact methods many of us grew up with, they are usually taught methods that make the underlying place value, tens, hundreds and so on, visible. The idea is that if a child truly understands why a method works, they can use it flexibly and are less likely to make mistakes they cannot spot. So the "long way round" you may see is often a deliberate stepping stone towards the efficient method, not a replacement for it.

Column Addition and Subtraction

You will still recognise column methods, where numbers are lined up in columns by place value. What may look different is the language and the steps:

  • Children often start by partitioning numbers, breaking 46 into 40 and 6, to see the tens and units clearly
  • For addition, they add the columns and "carry" to the next column, much as you likely learned, but with more emphasis on what the carried digit actually represents
  • For subtraction, the compact method involves "exchanging" (what many of us called borrowing) a ten for ten units, and again the focus is on understanding the swap, not just the trick

The end point is the neat column method you know; the journey there just makes the reasoning explicit.

Other Methods You Might See

  • Number lines: children add or subtract by jumping along a line, which builds a feel for number and is great for mental methods
  • The grid method for multiplication: numbers are split into parts and multiplied in a grid, before children move on to compact written multiplication
  • Chunking for division: subtracting "chunks" of the divisor, as a stepping stone towards short and long division
  • Bar models: drawing bars to represent a problem, helping children see what is being asked, especially in word problems

These are tools for understanding, and children generally progress towards the more compact methods as they get older.

How to Help Without Confusing Them

  • Find out the school's method first. A quick look at their homework, a school workbook, or a note to the teacher tells you how they are being taught
  • Try not to insist on "your" way, even if it is quicker; two competing methods can confuse a child mid-learning. It is fine to show an alternative once they are secure, but follow the school's lead for now
  • Focus on understanding, asking "why does that work?" rather than just "what's the answer?"
  • Ask the school for guidance; many run parent workshops or share calculation guides precisely because they know it is different from how we learned

It Is Okay Not to Know

You do not need to be a maths expert to help your child. Sometimes the most useful thing you can say is "I'm not sure, let's work it out together" or "show me how your teacher does it", which models a healthy attitude to learning. Your encouragement and calm matter more than your ability to do long division in your head.
